According to Construction Industry Institute (CII), “Construction technology refers to the collection of innovative tools, machinery, modifications, software, etc. used during the construction phase of a project that enables advancement in field construction methods, including semi-automated and automated construction equipment.” CII research shows that adoption of proven technology can improve productivity by 30-45% and improve material predictability and reliability.

The construction industry accounts for approximately 13% of the global GDP. Yet despite that, according to Glenn Ebersole in his article titled, “Construction Industry Evolving by Adopting More Technology,” ”[the construction industry] has been on one the most stagnant and least efficient with a productivity growth rate of only approximately 1% over the past 20 years.”

One of the reasons for this stagnation is older generation resistance to modernization. However, with millennials and Z generations quickly filling leadership positions, adoption of new technologies has caused productivity and innovation to grow throughout the industry.

Ebersole provides an overview of these six trends that will have significant impact in construction during 2020:

  1. Increased integration of technologies
  2. The design-build or integrated project delivery approach
  3. Increased use of project management software
  4. Building information modeling (BIM), virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR)
  5. Commercial drones
  6. More advanced materials, including self-healing concrete
