At Triple Crown Construction, giving back to our community is a big part of our identity; it’s who we are. And often that means looking for the areas in our backyard or beyond that need the kind of help we’re equipped to provide. Right here in Frederick (where we are headquartered), there are many schools that lack adequate supplies that would allow students to have the best possible learning experience as they prepare for their futures. So, for the month of August, our team decided to run a supply drive to bring these needed resources to a third-grade class at Butterfly Ridge Elementary School, located here in town.

Butterfly Ridge is a Title 1 school, and the incoming third graders in Ms. Casey Keyser’s class amount to nearly thirty, many of which are children in the special education program. Just as at many underfunded schools, the teachers routinely spend money out of their own pockets to provide essential learning materials for their students, and Ms. Keyser is no exception in that regard—though in every other way she truly is an exceptional teacher.

Ms. Keyser is among the most dedicated teachers we’ve ever met and is beloved by her students. She always goes the extra mile to care for the children who rely on her, and to make sure they are getting the most they possibly could out of these formative years. During the third grade’s “classroom transformation” weeks, she always comes up with fun and interactive ways to engage her students—for example, this year she’ll have black light lessons for language arts and writing! (Can we audit that class? That sounds like fun!)

Ms. Keyser is among the most dedicated teachers we’ve ever met and is beloved by her students. She always goes the extra mile to care for the children who rely on her, and to make sure they are getting the most they possibly could out of these formative years.

In addition to her class, she is in charge of the Bow Tie Club—a special weekly meeting for male African American students between the third and fifth grades. During those meetings she provides lessons and team-building exercises in order to instill leadership skills that will serve them well as they grow up and embark on their adult lives.

To help out such an amazing teacher and make sure that her students have everything they need for a terrific school year, Triple Crown Construction collected supplies throughout the month of August—crayons, pencil boxes, markers, and even brightly colored gloves for the cold months on the way!—and headed to Butterfly Ridge earlier this month to hand-deliver the items.

With the students out of the room attending a presentation, three members of our team (Angie Ugaz, Liz McClung, and myself), had a few minutes to set up the supplies in the classroom for their return, and you can bet they were surprised to see the bounty of items arrayed on a table! At their teacher’s go-ahead, they swarmed the table, even posing with their favorite items for the photos Ms. Keyser took. “The joy on their faces said it all,” said Angie.  Ms. Keyser couldn’t hide her gratitude either as she exclaimed, “Thank you, a million times over!”

It was a wonderful afternoon, seeing their young faces light up and knowing we were able to give them a better school year like the one they deserve. Who knows, in a several years, maybe we’ll see one of them in our own office, coming to talk about renovation needs for their own projects!
