This time of year, it’s important to reflect on all that’s important to us and all that we have to be thankful for. We gather with family and friends to celebrate each other and the lives we’ve made. In many cases, we have reason to call ourselves lucky—even for things we take for granted, like a basic level of nutrition and sustenance, which not everyone is fortunate enough to reliably access.
Did you know that 40 million people in the United States struggle with “food insecurity,” as defined by the USDA, and 13 million of those are children who are routinely at risk of hunger? 1 in 6 American children may not know where their next meal is coming from.
And by hunger, we don’t just mean a growling stomach—a lack of adequate nutrition can “result in a weaker immune system, increased hospitalization, lower IQ, shorter attention spans, and lower academic achievement,” according to Blessings in a Backpack (BIAB), a non-profit organization that serves to help children get the nutrition they need on the weekends, outside of the school week where they are often fed by federal government programs.
Blessings in a Backpack feeds more than 87,000 children in over 1,000 schools across 45 states and the District of Columbia. The Frederick, MD chapter of BIAB alone provides weekend backpacks of non-perishable, kid-friendly food to 2,750 children in 19 local schools. And if there are weather emergencies (not uncommon in this part of the country!) they provide “Emergency Snack Packs (ESPs)” for short emergencies and “Blizzard Bags” for longer ones, to make sure students have a wholesome food option when they unexpectedly find themselves going without school meals.
Triple Crown Construction has always made it part of our company’s very fabric to take care of those in our own community, so this holiday season we wanted to support our local BIAB chapter and provide assistance in their important mission.
On Thursday, November 21, just prior to Thanksgiving, the whole TCC team got together to do a “bag stuffing” event at the office. That afternoon we spent assembling ESPs—packed with nutritious foods like apple sauce cups, fruit cups, granola bars, oatmeal packets, instant chicken soup mix, and the like—so we could deliver them to BIAB, ready for the next weather emergency. We came together even closer as a team and did something important for people in our community who need us.
Thanks in part to our contribution, along with a few others in the community, the Frederick chapter BIAB organization now has enough Emergency Snack Packs to fulfill an entire round of distribution to kids in their network. A normal year will require four or five of these rounds, so our contribution will really help their preparations as they feed our community’s children this season.
We at Triple Crown hope you have a lot to be grateful for and encourage you to look into ways you can also give back to your community this season. Cheers!
