According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 19.7 million American adults (aged 12 and older) battled a substance use disorder in 2017. This epidemic isn’t happening out of sight or elsewhere—it’s affecting our neighbors and friends. In Frederick County, overdoses are becoming more and more common, and substance abuse of some kind (opioids, alcohol, heroin, or another substance) is affecting larger bands of individuals.

Our community is stronger when we work together to help one another out, and that’s why Triple Crown Construction proudly took part in the Frederick County Goes Purple (FCGP) campaign- a call to action to unify the county toward the goal of reducing substance-related deaths and overdoses.

Throughout the state of Maryland, six counties have already adopted the call to action and “gone purple”; for the month of September, Frederick County took its turn in showing support. September is National Recovery Month, and the color purple is associated with that awareness campaign. Individuals and organizations were encouraged to “go purple” to demonstrate their support of those in active addiction, recovery, and their loved ones; and to invest in resources and education to prevent the increase of addiction in the future, particularly for younger generations who are undereducated about the effects and dangers of these substances.

Triple Crown “went purple” through various displays of support. For instance, we changed our logo to purple for the month and flew a dozen purple flags in the yard outside our building to let those suffering know we’ve got their backs. Alongside the flags were two yard signs, one with the FCGP logo and another with our own purple logo. We wanted to let our neighbors, clients, and the whole community know that we stand behind this initiative.

And more than that—we’re not just behind it as a group of individuals, but as an entire united organization. We purchased t-shirts from the FCGP website and adorned them with our company logos, wearing them around the office and also to community functions like the monthly Chamber business card exchange. We also used our social media reach to share important information on the epidemic with people who might not otherwise have been aware.

Triple Crown supports those recovering from or seeking treatment for substance abuse and encourages you and your organization to support this cause as well, in all months of the year, not just September.  Those struggling with addiction have to fight it year-round and can use our help no matter if it’s National Recovery Month or not.
