Garrett JuddEach month we aim to highlight a worthy member of the Triple Crown Construction family—those doing good for our clients, our team, or the world outside our business. This month we’re happy to introduce you to someone who has not only had an impact here at home but beyond it: project superintendent, Garrett Judd!

As a superintendent, Garrett gets to travel to different locations throughout the country as part of his regular duties, learning about the unique challenges presented by different building types, state regulations, climate and weather patterns, and a lot more. This can be a lot of fun; “my job never gets old,” he said, and seeing a town change after a new building is erected or an existing one is renovated is very gratifying to him. There’s always an unforeseen, unique hurdle or challenge to every project, and while that can be stressful to some, for Garrett it’s part of what makes the job satisfying.

At Triple Crown, we’ve come to rely on Garrett since he joined us last year, but this April it came to his attention that another community could use his careful attention and help.

tornadoA tornado tore through Laurel, Delaware on April 14th that did an incredible amount of damage to the small community—the town is home to just over 4,000 residents, according to the 2016 U.S. Census. The tornado was a category EF2 that had winds up to 135 miles per hour, and it was on the ground damaging property and nature for about six miles. Downed trees, wind, and large airborne debris caused damage to structures including residential homes.

To help that community get back on its feet after such a damaging storm, Garrett went with a group of good Samaritans to help assist with the cleanup process. He was onsite on April 19th and 20th, taking a personal day to help the residents of Laurel—removing debris from the roads, fields, and residents’ property, cutting up damaged or fallen trees and removing them, and anything else needed.

Tornado cleanup“After seeing the destruction caused by the tornado and the community come together to start rebuilding, I was inspired to help out with the cleanup,” Garrett said.

One of the pillars of the Triple Crown Way is giving back to the community, and while that can mean one’s own town and neighbors, it can more broadly refer to anyone who needs a helping hand. Garrett’s generous contribution to the town of Laurel perfectly exemplifies why he’s an outstanding member of the Triple Crown Construction family.

Garrett shared with us some thoughts about why he contributes to projects like these when he is able, and advice on those who want to get similarly involved in their own communities:

“It’s easy to be cynical in our current age and only do things that benefit yourself,” he said. “But the satisfaction you’ll receive from doing something meaningful for others is immense, and it doesn’t stop there; you’ll set an example for those around you, and they might take a cue from your character and leadership skills and be moved to help out others themselves. This kind of activism can spread this way!

“For those wanting to be more involved in their community or do something positive in the world, seek out local organizations to find out where help is needed the most. There are many groups out there that help your communities and beyond, and you can join one that is involved in projects familiar to you or that is working on something new entirely. It can be time-consuming, but the end result is always worth it: you’re putting more goodness into the world and raising the morale of the whole community, and that’s something that we can never have enough of in this world.”
