Improved Cleaning Protocols - Clean Hotel, Happy Guests!

 

Over the last 3 months, face masks and latex gloves have become normal when leaving one’s home, along with hand sanitizer readily available whenever touching public items during shopping trips for essentials. Cleanliness has become more than just a desire…it’s now a necessity due to the COVID-19 crisis across the globe.

Every industry has been forced to re-evaluate how they do business to ensure their customers are protected when receiving services or shopping for products.  For some industries, such as hotels and restaurants, cleanliness has always been a focus that has now been accelerated to an even higher degree based on coronavirus concerns.

For instance, in 2012, Best Western Hotels & Resorts (BWHR) was the first hotel brand to establish an “I Care Clean” program focusing on guest high-touch items.  In 2020, BWHR improved their program to We Care CleanSM which includes “everything from guest room and common area cleanliness, to streamlined processes that minimize contact between guests and associates while maintaining industry-leading customer service.”

Airbnb cleanliness standards, though honored by hosts, still vary from location to location compared to established hotels utilizing professional cleaning staff or contractors.  Due to the dramatic decline in Airbnb reservations from shelter-in-place orders, Airbnb has been working hard to establish new cleaning protocols for hosts to prepare for the gradual re-opening of state and country borders to travelers.

Inc. Magazine has been monitoring the hotel industry over the last few months. They published an article on “7 Ways Hotels Will Change Post-Pandemic.”  Those changes will most likely be guest temperature checks before being able to enter the hotel, maintaining social distancing requirements and masks in common areas, stricter sanitation practices, more automation (such as check-in procedures) to reduce human interaction, replacing breakfast buffets with packaged grab-and-go items, reduced restaurant/bar/coffee services, and closing gyms, spas and other amenities.

Hotels are also implementing other procedures including improved disinfecting protocols, transparent housekeeping practices, providing guests with sanitizing tools in their rooms, and upgraded staff training requirements for health precautions. The AHLA (American Hotel & Lodging Association) has also introduced Safe Stay to ensure enhanced safety for hotels guests and employees. “While hotels have always employed demanding cleaning standards, this new initiative will ensure greater transparency and confidence throughout the entire hotel experience,” said Chip Rogers, president and CEO of AHLA. “The industry’s enhanced hotel cleaning practices, social interactions, and workplace protocols will continue to evolve to meet the new health and safety challenges and expectations presented by COVID-19.”

It is unclear when the hospitality and travel industry will go back to some sense of “normal” and begin seeing a rise in hotel and flight bookings.  But what is clear is that travelers across the globe are going to demand more assurances that the services they purchase are clean and safe to a much higher degree than before. As long as hotels keep pace with the new cleanliness regulations, and the virus statistics continue to decline, people will most likely venture out for business and leisure travel once again.
