A Summer Block Party! Co-Hosting the Chamber of Commerce Business Card Exchange and Dunking for Charity

Each month, the Chamber of Commerce in Frederick, MD has a Business Card Exchange—a chance to network with fellow businesses and members of the community toward the goal of building a stronger economy and organization for all. This past month, Triple Crown Construction and its business park neighbors, St. John Properties, AMI Signs, and Georgetown Insurance, got the chance to host the event, and decided to kick it up a notch as the weather warmed up—summer block party, anyone?

Business Card Exchange outdoor eventAs we were all excited for the arrival of summer, kicking off the season with an outdoor event seemed a perfect fit! Of course, people would still come to exchange business cards and get to know local businesses a little better—but why not simultaneously enjoy margaritas, Rita’s Italian ice, and (because we don’t do anything halfway here at Triple Crown), a dunk tank?

The community seemed to like this idea—the May event on the 22nd broke the Chamber of Commerce record for attendees at a business card exchange with nearly 300 guests! People really enjoy nice weather, good food and conversation, and connecting with their community (or maybe it was the chance to dunk their bosses in a tank of cold water that tipped the scale)!

attendance for May BCX“As a new member of Triple Crown Construction, I found the Frederick business card exchange to be a grand experience,” said David Krause, service division manager at Triple Crown. “It was a great opportunity to say hello and get to know the decision-makers in town. The huge turnout was an encouraging show of camaraderie—hopefully next time even more will attend!”

Because community and taking care of one another is a huge part of Triple Crown Construction’s values, the hosts decided to use the dunk tank to raise money for an important organization in the community. We sold time slots in the tank (where you could sign yourself up or nominate someone else for the “hot seat”) as well as throws that, if aimed properly, would send the tank’s resident plunging into the water. As May is also the month of Mother’s Day, the organization we chose to donate the dunk tank funds to was Heartly House, which does incredible work for mothers and women throughout Frederick County.

Since 1979, Heartly House has provided crucial services to survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and child abuse—the only organization in the county to do so. They offer services to survivors such as a 24-hour hotline, crisis intervention, emergency shelter, legal advocacy and representation counseling, and more, all at no cost to the individual. We’re grateful for their presence in our community and are happy to help them raise funds for these much-needed services. Incredible organizations like Heartly House have helped countless people, including one of Triple Crown’s own.

“I have relied on the resources of a women’s shelter in the past, so I know firsthand their dedication to helping women and children (and in many cases, men, too) who are stuck in abusive situations,” said Angie Ugaz, project coordinator at Triple Crown. “Especially when you feel like you have nowhere else to turn, they truly are a God-send.”

Triple Crown Construction and the other co-hosts of the event also set up a collection box for tangible items that Heartly House is always in need of (things like toiletries, tote bags, soap, and coffee), which attendees donated generously to as well.

“The event both started and ended with smiles,” said Zoe Eackles, Triple Crown’s administrative assistant. “This was the perfect way to kick off summer, meeting your neighbors and seeing so many people support a local organization that is truly important.”

Thanks to everyone who attended this month and made it such a success—hopefully you enjoyed the food and conversation, and perhaps got a few bullseyes and dunked some friends (or took a plunge yourself!). See you next time!
