Animal shelter construction is on the rise, and the design of those shelters cannot be an afterthought. The importance of caring for animals properly is something that people understand better than before. Therefore, they want to provide a comfortable, nurturing environment for the animals they house. Previously, shelters focused more on just providing space, without much consideration for design. The situation is different now and understanding why proper construction design is good for animals is crucial.

Importance of Proper Design for Health and Wellness

Hundreds of thousands of animals around the U.S. require proper care and shelter. Yet, simply putting dozens of creatures in the same space is not an ideal solution. If you are operating a shelter with limited space, you run the risk of an outbreak. All it takes is one sick animal for others to contract the illness or disease, and before you know it you are dealing with an epidemic. Not to mention, when you have more animals than you can manage, keeping the shelter clean is also a major challenge.

Shelter owners have no option but to house the animals until someone comes in to adopt them. Hence, focusing on effective construction design is the key. Managing the shelter and the animals becomes easier when you have designed ample space. The management can also set up processes to care for the animals from the moment they come into adoption. This concept is “flow-through”.

Focus on People

Yes, the space is for housing animals, but that is not the only purpose an animal shelter serves. The space needs to be designed to allow visitors to spend time with the animals to make an informed adoption decision. A dingy, smelly, and overcrowded space will put them off.  Instead of staying there for a while to visit with animals that catch their attention, they will want to get out the door quickly. Providing a welcoming environment will boost adoptions and even transfers.

Effective Allocation

The problem most shelters face is focusing on budget when calculating the holding capacity of their building. Even a huge shelter will not solve the problem alone and adapting to the space available is important. Efficient design is the key here, including the holding capacity and other amenities. Managing the housing of the animals is also essential to avoid visual contact with each other as needed.

There are a multitude of options available including pods of different sizes, while still providing ample room for the animals. Work with a professional designer and you will be able to construct an animal shelter that serves your needs without having to break the bank. Keep in mind that without focusing on design, speeding up adoptions can prove a challenge.
